Power Supply Danger

Beware when buying replacement laptop and netbook power supplies! Sometimes you can source a good replacement laptop power supply off the internet and it will do the job fine, but we have a couple of caveats. One such power supply was “doing its job”, but after some people were “getting a bit of a tingle” when they touched the netbook that it was plugged into we got the oscilloscope onto it and found that it was putting about 90v ac onto the chassis of the netbook. If in doubt, don’t buy low cost power supplies as this one was potentially lethal. Another problem that we have found on a few occasions is that either none of the choice of adapters quite fits or the socket on the laptop has been damaged. If the plug doesn’t make a really good connection with the socket then you get “resistive heating” which can melt the plug and / or the socket and can burn...

Changing Passwords

A number of our customers have recently called us after entering their details including passwords into a ‘scam’ message, and with the recent news that the social network site Linkedin has been hacked and millions of passwords have been leaked, we are all being advised to change our passwords.   With this in mind we thought that we would give you some advice about passwords and keeping your online accounts secure. There are so many things these days that requires passwords, that’s why people finds it difficult to remember them all, as a result they use the same passwords. This is a big mistake, because if one of your passwords is hacked, then all your passwords are at risk. We suggest that you have different passwords for different accounts. These passwords can be similar but not the same. Choosing a password Choosing the correct password is something that a lot of people find difficult and perhaps because of this many people’s passwords are chosen badly.  When choosing a new password keeps the following information in mind: use between 8 and 15 characters. The more characters the better, but anything more than 15 characters people tend to find difficult to remember.  use a mixture of upper and lower case, numbers, symbols and punctuation. e.g. pA55wOrd 1lT@tQ’s = One likes tea at the queen’s never use the same password twice. Do not switch between the same passwords when you come the change them, always create a new one. do not use words found in a dictionary, this will make it more difficult to remember them. if you find it difficult to remember all the different passwords, you can make a note of them in a notepad. But never store your passwords on your PC or laptop. In order to keep your on-line account more secure we would advise you: to change your password on a regular basis, we suggest once every few months is reasonable for most purposes. to change your password whenever you think that somebody knows it or even that they might have guessed...

Helping Yourself

Most of us these days are in a position where we depend on our computers on daily basis. So what would you do if something happens to your computer? We have put together some information about ways to prevent something happening to your PC. By following the advice given we are not saying that something will never happen to your PC, but it could help prevent it.   Laptops Laptops are designed with the idea that you can use it anywhere, but when using your laptop try not to use it on a surface where fluff might be able to get into the fan, such as carpets, beds, sofas. If the fan becomes clogged up with fluff it could make the machine overheat. Where possible try to use a hard surface such as a table. If you think that your fan is blocked and would like it cleaned, please contact us. Power Cables This mainly applies to Laptop but also keep it in mind when you’re setting up a desktop. Do not place power cables across the floor where people may be walking. This is not just for Health and Safety reasons but also because it could lead to damage to the power socket in the laptop. If you there is damage to the socket it could lead to the laptop not charging correctly and/or overheating. If you think that you may have damaged your power socket please contact us for assistance. As you may be aware power adapters can become hot, to make sure that they don’t overheat try not to cover them up.   Try to keep your power cable straight and do not allow it to hang, this could lead to the cable becoming damaged.   Downloads These days most people are using the internet and downloading different type of data (music, videos, documents, etc).  When downloading items please make sure that you know what you are downloading, as some downloads could contain malware.
